A Strange Kind of Farming

While extracting some dandelions from my back yard (I know, leave them and be bee friendly), I was struck by some of the absurdity of our modern lives, at least from the perspective of people who lived long ago. A couple choice examples:

  • Going to the gym. “Wait – you pay a monthly fee, so you can drive somewhere, and lift heavy things, for no reason?” Clearly there is a reason, but people in the past who worked jobs that involved a lot of physical labor likely would find it ridiculous.
  • The modern lawn. “Wait – you pay and work to fertilize, water, and weed your land so it… looks nice?! Is comfy to walk on for tenderfoots?” Again, I suspect anyone who actually had to grow food in order to eat would find maintaining a (sub)urban lawn to be a pointless and ridiculous exercise (and yes, I know you can landscape differently, but grass is still a sort of default option for at least part of a yard, even in Colorado).
  • Pets. “Wait, you BUY FOOD for a dog or cat?”

Not saying any are wrong, but you have to admit…
